I find it interesting that I am told people need bosses. I have been told that by friends talking about themselves or about people they oversee.
Often I am left speechless. As in, I don’t quite know how to disagree. I have felt that too but I think back and realize that it wasn’t a boss I needed.
We don’t need bosses we need inspired leaders. More importantly we need like-minded and motivated individuals.
Just read this: http://www.paulgraham.com/determination.html. My takeaway point? That ambitious people need ambitious peers.
Anyone can motivate. You can motivate others through questions and curiosity. Through conversation and compassion. Once you realize the ways in which you can motivate, and how to activate your motivation it can become a leadership tool. Then, hop on and ride with others’ motivation - keep momentum in partnership.
So back to the ‘need a boss’ topic, I don’t believe we need bosses. Do you need big brother? What do you need?
More often than not we will accept the bricks that are the boss. We agree to be overseen and prodded because we trade in some freedom for job security. We agree on this, but you don’t need this more than you need transparent kleenex. (huh?)
I write of this because I am now ‘my own boss’. But no, in being independent my boss is my client (yes, I need this boss). A company you may work for has a boss that is the client and there are layers between you and the client. Can you flee the layers, is the question. (…though there will always be layers of some sort…)
You can do a lot: free yourself (and) overcome some fear by finding motivated and like-minded people. THAT can take you anywhere.
